Andy Burnham Enters Race to Replace Starmer as UK Prime Minister, Wes Streeting Throws Support Behind Former Manchester Mayor

LONDON, Veteran British politician Andy Burnham has formally declared his intention to succeed Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister following Starmer’s resignation announcement.

Burnham, 56, confirmed his candidacy on Monday, calling for what he described as an “orderly and responsible” transition of leadership as the ruling party prepares to select a new leader.

“I will put myself forward as part of this process,” Burnham wrote in a post on X, signaling his readiness to lead both the Labour Party and the government.

The former cabinet minister and ex-Mayor of Greater Manchester is widely regarded as one of Labour’s most experienced figures, having previously held several senior government positions.

In a significant development, former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who had earlier indicated an interest in contesting the party leadership, announced that he would instead support Burnham’s bid.

Streeting’s endorsement is expected to strengthen Burnham’s position within the party and could potentially discourage rival candidates from entering the race.

Political observers say the backing of a prominent Labour figure raises the possibility that Burnham could emerge as the party’s next leader without facing a highly contested leadership battle.

The Labour Party is expected to outline the timetable and process for selecting Starmer’s successor in the coming weeks, with a new leader anticipated to take office before the end of September.

Burnham’s announcement marks the first major move in what is shaping up to be a crucial leadership transition for the governing party and the United Kingdom.
