Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has stated that he would prioritize a constitutional amendment to formalize rotational presidency if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Wednesday during an appearance on Prime Time, a programme aired on Arise Television, Atiku emphasized his longstanding support for zoning as a means of promoting fairness and national unity. He argued that embedding the principle in the constitution would create a more balanced and predictable system for power sharing across the country.
According to him, such a reform would be a top priority of his administration, even if it were the only constitutional change he could achieve while in office.
Atiku also noted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains unique among major political parties in Nigeria for incorporating zoning into its internal constitution, describing it as a model for broader national adoption.
