Former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has cautioned Nigerians against making defamatory statements on social media or television, warning that legal battles can become financially and emotionally draining.
In a post shared about five hours ago on his official Facebook page, the Distinguished Senator advised public commentators and social media users to exercise restraint in their public statements. He noted that while lawyers may initially reassure clients that controversial remarks fall under freedom of expression or personal opinion, defendants often bear significant legal costs once litigation begins.
According to him, defamation suits can linger in court for years, piling up expenses and stress for those involved. He warned that even cases at the magistrate level should not be taken lightly, as prolonged court proceedings can take a serious toll.
Sani also observed that public support often fades once legal challenges begin. While friends and associates may show solidarity at the early stages of a case, he suggested that many eventually distance themselves, leaving the defendant to face the consequences alone.
His remarks serve as a broader reminder about responsible communication in the digital age and the potential legal implications of public commentary.
