DHAKA, Bangladesh — Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing health challenges, ending his presidency nearly two years before the expiration of his five-year term.
According to reports, Shahabuddin submitted his resignation letter to Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on July 24, 2026. His decision follows a diagnosis of autonomic neuropathy, a condition that has caused episodes of momentary loss of consciousness. He is also reportedly receiving treatment for heart disease and high blood pressure.
Shahabuddin, who assumed office in April 2023, was among the last senior state officials closely associated with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to remain in office following the country’s political changes.
In line with Bangladesh’s constitutional provisions, Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will temporarily perform the duties of the president until a successor is elected.
The constitution requires parliament to elect a new president within 90 days to complete the transition.
The resignation marks another significant development in Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape as the country prepares for the selection of a new head of state.
