A Nigerian woman has called for a ban on DNA paternity testing, arguing that the practice is contributing to the breakdown of marriages and families.
The woman made the call in a video shared on X, where she questioned why married men would conduct paternity tests on children born during their marriages if they genuinely trusted their wives.
According to her, a child born while a couple is married should automatically be accepted by the husband as his, irrespective of whether the wife may have been unfaithful.
“Men are always cheating, but when a woman cheats and brings in another child, it’s always a problem,” she said.
She argued that men who trust their wives should have no reason to seek DNA testing, questioning why a man would marry a woman he does not trust.
“There is no need of you conducting a DNA test though. Another question is why are you even getting married to women that you don’t trust?” she said.
The woman repeatedly called for DNA testing to be prohibited, claiming that it was damaging marriages and homes.
“Let them ban DNA. Ban DNA. Ban DNA. DNA is destroying marriages. It’s destroying homes,” she said.
She also compared contemporary marriages with those of previous generations, arguing that DNA testing was not common among their forefathers.
“Every small thing, DNA, DNA. Our forefathers did not conduct DNA. Any child that was born under their roof is their child automatically,” she added.
The woman further suggested that infidelity could sometimes be a mistake that a spouse might regret without disclosing it to their partner, particularly out of fear of the consequences.
She questioned the wisdom of conducting a DNA test when the intention was to preserve a peaceful marriage.
“And you will now start conducting DNA for what exactly? Peaceful marriage, you want to just destroy it with your hands,” she said.
Her comments have generated reactions online, with the debate highlighting differing views on paternity testing, marital trust, infidelity, family stability and the rights of parents to establish biological relationships with their children.
While some may view DNA testing as a means of establishing biological paternity, the woman’s position is that such tests can create suspicion and conflict within families.
