Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has questioned the credibility of Labour Party figure Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.
Onanuga made the remarks in a post shared on X on Thursday, following Obi’s appearance on News Central Television, where the former Anambra State governor reiterated his commitment to a single-term presidency.
During the interview, Obi said he would willingly limit himself to one term in office if elected, arguing that such a move would promote national stability.
“I will not stay a day longer, even with a gun to my head,” Obi said during the interview.
The 2023 presidential candidate also criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of excessive borrowing and expressing concerns over the country’s economic and security situation.
According to Obi, the current administration has borrowed more within two years than previous administrations combined, while also alleging that living conditions and insecurity have worsened across the country.
Reacting to the comments, Onanuga said Nigerians should be cautious about taking Obi’s one-term pledge at face value, citing the former governor’s political history.
“If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything,” Onanuga wrote.
The presidential aide referenced Obi’s previous political affiliations, noting that the former governor had once pledged loyalty to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) before later moving to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and subsequently the Labour Party.
Onanuga argued that Obi’s political transitions over the years raise questions about the consistency of his commitments and public promises.
The exchange adds to the growing political debate ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political actors continue to position themselves and respond to emerging campaign narratives.
