Former United States President Bill Clinton has urged members of the Democratic Party to approach their victories in the 2026 midterm elections with humility, determination and a renewed commitment to rebuilding public trust.
Clinton made the appeal in a post-election statement published on his official X account, formerly known as Twitter, following significant Democratic gains in the November 3 midterm elections.
The former president described the electoral outcome as both an opportunity and a responsibility for Democrats, stressing that their victory should not be a reason for political arrogance but an opportunity to demonstrate responsible leadership.
According to Clinton, the party must work towards restoring public confidence by embracing cooperation and extending goodwill to Americans who did not support its candidates.
He urged Democratic leaders to offer an “open hand, not a clenched fist” to political opponents, emphasising the importance of working across party lines in addressing the country’s challenges.
Clinton also reminded Democrats that their electoral success came with expectations from voters, particularly on issues affecting household finances and access to essential services.
He highlighted the need to lower the cost of living, ease the economic pressures facing American families and protect access to healthcare.
The former president’s remarks followed an active campaign period during which he travelled to different parts of the country to support Democratic candidates.
In late October, Clinton campaigned in Tupelo, Mississippi, for Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom, where he addressed rising grocery and fuel prices, healthcare access and the economic impact of tariffs on families, farmers and small businesses.
During the campaign, he also criticised divisive political rhetoric and encouraged Americans to participate in the electoral process, arguing that elected officials should prioritise policies that improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
His post-election message places emphasis on the responsibility that comes with electoral victories, urging Democrats to translate their gains into practical solutions, inclusive governance and renewed public confidence.
Clinton concluded by reiterating his belief that the United States makes greater progress when its political leaders work together rather than allow partisan differences to deepen divisions.
