United States President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush welcomed President-elect Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, to the White House on November 10, 2008, following Obama’s victory in the November 4 presidential election.
The historic visit marked the first formal meeting between the outgoing Bush administration and the incoming Obama family as preparations began for the transfer of presidential power.
The Obamas arrived at the White House South Portico eleven minutes ahead of schedule, where they were received by the president and first lady.
After exchanging pleasantries and posing for photographs, Bush and Obama walked together along the White House Colonnade towards the Oval Office, where they held a private meeting. It was Obama’s first visit to the presidential office as president-elect.
Their discussions focused on the transition process, the worsening global financial crisis, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and national security challenges confronting the United States.
While the two leaders met, Laura Bush took Michelle Obama on a guided tour of the Executive Residence, showing her the private family quarters that would soon become the home of the incoming First Family.
The meeting was an important moment in the American democratic tradition, reflecting the peaceful transfer of power between two administrations from opposing political parties.
