Veteran Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie, has shared some of the values he believes have sustained his marriage for more than 50 years, identifying respect, trust, patience and responsibility as the foundation of a lasting relationship.
The respected actor made this known in a message reflecting on his longstanding marriage, offering insights into how he and his wife have navigated different stages of their lives together.
According to Edochie, one of the most important principles he has upheld throughout their marriage is never using physical violence or intimidation against his wife.
“In all our years together, I have never raised my hand against her. I grew up understanding that a woman is not someone to be intimidated or mistreated. She is someone to be respected and protected,” he said.
The veteran actor also recalled that he and his wife began their broadcasting careers in the same year, after which she proceeded to study law and eventually returned to her professional career.
He explained that he never considered his wife’s educational and professional achievements a threat to his position as a husband, stressing that marriage should be built on mutual respect rather than competition.
Edochie further disclosed that he had never treated his wife’s earnings as a source of rivalry or felt entitled to monitor how she spent her money.
“Whatever she earns is hers, and I have never felt the need to monitor her gratuity or question what she does with her money,” he stated.
Reflecting on the responsibilities that come with marriage, the actor noted that when a father gives his daughter in marriage, he entrusts her wellbeing to another man, adding that such trust should never be taken for granted.
He maintained that marriage should not be about controlling a partner or establishing superiority but about creating a home where both individuals feel respected, valued and secure.
The veteran actor also emphasised that a man’s strength should not be measured by his ability to dominate or intimidate his wife.
“More than 50 years of marriage have taught me that a strong man does not need to intimidate his wife to earn her respect,” he said.
Edochie concluded that love, patience, responsibility and mutual understanding remain essential ingredients for sustaining a successful marriage.
His reflections have highlighted the importance of mutual respect, financial independence and non-violence in building lasting relationships.
