President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to establish a dedicated support fund for members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, including those injured in active service and the families of personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.
A statement by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, stated that President Tinubu directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to establish a special account for the fund, which will provide targeted support to injured service members, as well as to widows, widowers, and children of those who lost their lives in service to the country.
The announcement, made on Sunday to mark his 74th birthday, was framed as a tribute to the bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of the nation’s military.
Tinubu called on state governors, lawmakers, private sector stakeholders, as well as friends and well-wishers to contribute to the initiative. He noted that full details of the fund would be unveiled in the coming days.
According to the President, the initiative reflects a national responsibility to care for those who risk their lives for the country and the loved ones they leave behind, regardless of existing insurance provisions.
He stressed that supporting military personnel and their families should not be seen as charity, but as a collective duty.
Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of armed forces personnel, ensuring their service is met with dignity, proper care, and sustained institutional support.
