ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu on Monday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to defeating terrorism and banditry in Nigeria, describing the security challenges as unacceptable and alien to the country’s cultural values.

Speaking while declaring open the Second National Economic Council (NEC) Conference at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, the President assured Nigerians that his government would continue to strengthen the nation’s security architecture to restore peace across affected communities.

“We will overcome this unacceptable terrorism and banditry. It’s not part of our culture. It’s foreign to us,” Tinubu said, adding that insecurity remains one of the issues keeping the government “sleepless at night.”

The President described insecurity as a major obstacle to economic growth and called for collective action to urgently address the challenge. He commended governors, particularly those of Borno, Katsina and Kaduna states, for their efforts in defending lives and property.

Tinubu also highlighted ongoing economic reforms, noting that monetary policy adjustments have helped stabilise the economy and restore investor confidence. He praised the Central Bank of Nigeria under Governor Yemi Cardoso for rebuilding confidence in the country’s monetary framework.

According to the President, increased and more predictable federal allocations have enhanced the capacity of state and local governments to pay salaries, invest in infrastructure and deliver social services.

He said the Renewed Hope National Development Plan 2026–2030 prioritises inclusive growth, economic diversification, human capital development, private sector-led growth and climate resilience, stressing that its success depends largely on effective implementation at subnational levels.

The two-day conference was themed “Delivering Inclusive Growth and Sustainable National Development: The Renewed Hope National Development Plan 2026–2030.”

The press release was signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga
