The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed as false a viral image circulating on social media that claims to show a newly introduced N5,000 banknote.
The image, widely shared online, suggested that the apex bank had unveiled a new currency design featuring Bola Ahmed Tinubu, prompting widespread reactions and debate over its authenticity.
Responding to the claims, the CBN clarified in a statement posted on its official X handle that the information is untrue.
“This content is fake. Let the public be guided,” the bank stated.
The clarification follows similar rumours previously debunked by the CBN in 2025, when false reports claimed the introduction of N5,000 and N10,000 banknotes to ease cash transactions.
The apex bank reiterated that no such currency denominations have been introduced, urging the public to disregard misleading information and rely on official channels for updates.
