The Delta State House of Assembly has resumed plenary after its annual recess, with the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Guwor Emomotimi Dennis, calling on political parties, candidates and their supporters to ensure peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Guwor made the call on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, while delivering his opening address to lawmakers on the resumption of plenary at the Assembly complex.
The Speaker urged politicians to make the 2027 election campaigns a contest of ideas, programmes, competence, character and service rather than allowing the electoral season to degenerate into bitterness, violence and division.
He said the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 elections placed a special responsibility on political actors and citizens to protect the peace and democratic values of the state.
Campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections commenced on August 19, 2026, while campaigns for the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to begin on September 9.
“Let our campaigns be about ideas, programmes, competence, character and service. Election is not a do-or-die affair,” Guwor said.
The Speaker also congratulated the government and people of Delta State on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation, saying the Assembly joined Deltans at home and abroad in celebrating the milestone.
He commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his administration’s initiatives, particularly the recently held Delta State Economic and Investment Summit, describing it as a strategic platform for showcasing investment opportunities and attracting domestic and international investors.
Guwor assured the governor of the Assembly’s continued legislative support towards creating an enabling environment for investment, enterprise and economic development in the state.
The Speaker further welcomed the expansion of representation in the Delta State House of Assembly ahead of 2027, noting that the number of state constituencies would increase from 29 to 38.
According to him, the creation of nine additional constituencies is a historic development that would provide more communities with direct representation in the democratic process.
“Representation is at the heart of democracy. The restoration and creation of additional constituencies provide an opportunity for more communities to have a direct voice in this institution and in the democratic process,” he said.
Guwor also charged lawmakers to return from the recess with renewed commitment to their legislative responsibilities.
He urged committee chairmen and members to intensify work on pending Bills, Motions and Petitions and ensure that the remaining legislative calendar was effectively utilised.
The Speaker equally encouraged lawmakers to apply the knowledge and insights gained from their leadership training at the London Business School to improve the quality of legislative work in Delta State.
“I urge all Chairmen and Members of Committees to approach the remaining legislative calendar with renewed vigour. Let us attend to pending Bills, Motions and Petitions with dispatch,” he said.
Guwor began his address by expressing gratitude to God for His protection over lawmakers and their families during the recess, while welcoming members back to the Chamber.
He also congratulated Governor Oborevwori, the government and people of Delta State on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation.
The House subsequently commenced legislative business as lawmakers settled into the new session following the annual recess.
