Delta records first Kidney Transplant; Experts calls for greater collaboration

A kidney transplant exercise has successfully been carried out on a 31 year old man in a private hospital, Warri, Delta State.

 

The kidney transplant described as a  feat was carried out at Mount Horeb Hospital, Airport Road, Warri  and by Warri Transplant Group.

 

The living-donor kidney transplant was done by Warri Transplant Group and is a landmark achievement for Healthcare in Delta State.

 

The groundbreaking procedure aims to curb the trend of medical tourism, allowing patients to receive essential care closer to home.

 

The initiative was a collaborative effort led by a team of nephrologists, including the Transplant Coordinator Dr. Jimoh Abdulmalik ,Dr. Onyemekeihia Raphael, Dr. Henry Slater, Dr. Edema Great , Nephrologists nurse ,Vero Ebinum and others.

Their success is seen as a step toward reducing the need for Nigerians to travel to other countries for kidney transplants, thereby saving costs and enhancing trust in local medical services.

 

Speaking to newsmen, Dr. Onyemekeihia revealed that the seamless kidney transplant was done by both local and diaspora medical experts ,stressing that both the donor and recipient are doing very well.

 

He further disclosed that the feat was to complement the Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE agenda of providing good health care to the people.

 

Dr Raphael Onyemekeihia emphasized the urgent need for collaboration with the Delta State government to foster an environment that supports advanced healthcare initiatives.

 

Dr. Henry Slater and Dr. Great Edema noted that the rising incidence of kidney disease in Nigeria is a pressing issue, adding that it needs local solutions.

 

They commended the Delta state government for reducing the cost of dialysis procedure in Government hospitals to alleviate the financial burden on the patient and their family.

 

The Transplant group called on Delta State Government to collaborate with them for a more successful kidney transplant .

 

The nephrologists disclosed that they saved the patient up to N8 million compared to procedures in other locations like Abuja or abroad.

 

The 31- year-old male patient expressed gratitude to the doctors for carrying out a successful surgery on him.

“I am happy that the surgery was successful and I give thanks to God and I’m calling on kidney failure patients in Delta State or outside the state to come for a kidney transplant in Mount Horeb Hospital, Airport Road, Warri for treatment ”. The patient advised.
