BENIN CITY – The Director-General of the Edo State Tourism Agency, Mrs. Vivian Elabor, has warned residents against dumping refuse in the state’s historic moats, stressing that violators will face stiff penalties.

Elabor gave the warning on Wednesday while addressing journalists in Benin City, expressing concern over the increasing misuse of the ancient moats as refuse disposal sites despite their historical, cultural, and tourism significance.

According to her, the agency has intensified efforts to educate residents on the importance of preserving the moats, which were originally constructed by the ancestors as a defensive system to protect communities.

“Many people today do not fully appreciate the value of the moats. The outside world understands the importance of preserving historical and tourism assets, and we want our people to develop the same appreciation,” she said.

The tourism boss emphasized that preserving the moats remains a key priority of the agency as part of broader efforts to protect and promote Edo State’s rich cultural heritage.

“There will be stiff penalties for anyone caught dumping refuse in the moats. We must preserve our heritage and restore the legacy of these historic structures for future generations,” Elabor stated.

She noted that Edo State is endowed with numerous tourism assets, revealing that no fewer than 72 tourist sites are spread across the state. However, she lamented that many of these attractions remain underutilized despite their immense potential to drive economic growth.

Elabor said the agency is positioning tourism as a major tool for job creation, wealth generation, and increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the state.

“Edo State must reduce its dependence on federal allocations. Tourism can play a significant role in driving economic development, creating employment opportunities, and attracting investment. We are determined to make Edo a leading tourism destination in Nigeria,” she added.

The Director-General also disclosed that the agency’s forthcoming summit, themed ‘Edo Tourism: The New Frontier – Exhibition and Fashion Show,’ is designed to showcase and promote the state’s rich cultural heritage and tourism potential.

She highlighted some of Edo’s notable tourist attractions and cultural festivals, including Igun Street, the Igue Festival, the Ososo Festival, the Ubiaja Festival, and the Amar Waterfall in Esanland.

Also speaking, the Director of Administration and Supplies of the agency, Mrs. Kushe Ojekhoa, announced that the 2026 Tourism Summit, Exhibition and Fashion Show will hold from June 29 to June 30.

Ojekhoa disclosed that winners of the fashion show competition would receive cash prizes, while all participants would be given participation allowances as part of efforts to encourage creativity and support emerging talents within the state’s creative industry.

She expressed optimism that the event would further boost awareness of Edo’s tourism potential while providing a platform for cultural expression, networking, and economic opportunities.
