Nigeria’s Falconets have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after cruising to a convincing 3-0 victory over England.
The Nigerian side delivered a dominant performance to secure their second win of the tournament and extend their impressive goalscoring record to 13 goals in four matches.
Tosin Rafiu put the Falconets ahead in the eighth minute, giving Nigeria an early advantage and setting the tone for the encounter.
England had an opportunity to level the scores in the first half after being awarded a penalty, but Falconets captain Christiana Uzoma produced a crucial save to deny Rachel Maltby and preserve Nigeria’s lead going into the break.
Nigeria doubled their advantage just two minutes into the second half when Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei found the back of the net.
Mary Mamudu then put the result beyond doubt in the 73rd minute, completing the scoring and sealing an emphatic 3-0 victory for the Falconets.
The win means Nigeria have now recorded two victories, one draw and one defeat in four matches at the tournament, while keeping two clean sheets.
The Falconets will return to action in the quarter-finals on September 20, where they are scheduled to face either Poland or Colombia at Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź in Łódź.
Kick-off is scheduled for 6:30pm WAT.
The victory over England further strengthens Nigeria’s campaign as the Falconets continue their quest for success on the global stage.
