The Federal Government has announced plans to embed journalists with military units during selected counterinsurgency and internal security operations as part of efforts to enhance transparency, improve security reporting and strengthen public confidence in the Armed Forces.

The initiative was disclosed by the Minister of Defence,  General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) during the National Security Summit, where he stressed the need for closer collaboration between the military and the media in addressing security challenges across the country.

According to the minister, the programme is designed to provide journalists with firsthand exposure to ongoing military operations, enabling them to report more accurately on security issues while helping to counter misinformation and misleading narratives surrounding the nation’s security situation.

He explained that participation in the programme would be strictly regulated, with comprehensive safety protocols and operational guidelines put in place to protect media personnel and ensure that military missions are not compromised.

The Defence Ministry is also considering extending the initiative to selected social media influencers and content creators, allowing them to visit conflict-affected areas and gain a better understanding of security operations and the realities faced by troops on the frontlines.

Defence officials noted that modern warfare extends beyond the battlefield and increasingly involves the information space, making effective communication and public engagement critical to national security efforts.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information called on media practitioners to uphold the principles of responsible journalism by avoiding the sensationalisation of terrorist activities and instead highlighting stories that promote national resilience, unity and support for security agencies.

The proposed initiative is expected to foster greater public understanding of military operations while strengthening cooperation between the government, the media and other stakeholders in the fight against insecurity.Recommended headline for maximum online engagement:
