Eku Baptist Hospital, a 150-bed secondary healthcare facility located along Hospital Road in Eku, Delta State, was once regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading healthcare institutions.
Established in 1945 by American Baptist missionaries, the hospital built a reputation for providing quality medical services, including emergency care, maternity services, and surgical treatment. For decades, it served as a major healthcare centre for residents of Eku and surrounding communities.
However, the hospital’s fortunes have steadily declined over the years. Following its transition from missionary administration, ownership and management responsibilities eventually shifted to the Eku community and the Delta State Government. While the hospital was originally expected to revert fully to the Eku community in 2005, the community reportedly faced significant challenges in funding, maintaining, and managing the facility effectively.
As a result, a hospital that was once a symbol of medical excellence has become a shadow of its former self. Residents and stakeholders say deteriorating infrastructure, inadequate equipment, and declining healthcare services have affected the hospital’s ability to meet the growing needs of patients.
Today, there are increasing calls from community leaders, healthcare advocates, and residents for the Delta State Government to undertake a comprehensive transformation of the hospital. Stakeholders are urging authorities to invest in the rehabilitation of facilities, provision of modern medical equipment, improved staffing, and enhanced healthcare services.
Many believe that with the right intervention, Eku Baptist Hospital can regain its status as a leading healthcare institution and once again provide quality medical care to the people of Eku, Delta State, and beyond.
