Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has called on members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the judiciary to uphold justice with courage, integrity and independence, stressing that strong institutions remain critical to the survival of democracy.
Fubara made the call while declaring open the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Port Harcourt, held under the theme, “Beyond Limits.”
The governor urged lawyers and judicial officers to remain committed to the principles of justice and the rule of law, free from political influence, unnecessary delays and technicalities that could undermine public confidence in the justice system.
According to him, democracy can only thrive when the rule of law is respected and institutions are strong enough to protect the rights and liberties of every citizen.
Fubara stressed that the judiciary and the legal profession have important roles to play in strengthening democratic governance, promoting accountability and ensuring that citizens have confidence in the justice system.
He said the quality of justice delivered in the country today would have a direct impact on Nigeria’s future, particularly its peace, stability and development.
The governor expressed optimism that the conference would provide an opportunity for legal practitioners, judges and other stakeholders to examine critical issues affecting the administration of justice and the rule of law in Nigeria.
He said the theme, “Beyond Limits,” was particularly relevant to the need for the legal profession and justice system to continually evolve in response to emerging challenges facing the nation.
Fubara, who described it as an honour to declare the conference open, reiterated his commitment to supporting institutions that promote justice, constitutional governance and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The 66th NBA Annual General Conference brings together legal practitioners and stakeholders from across Nigeria to deliberate on issues concerning the legal profession, justice administration and the nation’s democratic development.
