A Ghana Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong has died after armed robbers attacked his team while they were returning from an away match, authorities confirmed on Monday.
According to Berekun Chelsea FC, the incident occurred on Sunday night when the team bus came under fire from heavily armed assailants.
In a statement, the club said masked men carrying guns and assault rifles opened fire on the vehicle, forcing players and officials to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
Police reports indicate the robbery took place around 10:30 pm local time along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region. Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and later died in hospital while receiving treatment.
Authorities also confirmed that another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of 4,500 cedis (about $408) during the attack.
The Ghana Football Association described the killing as “tragic” and a significant loss to both Berekum Chelsea and Ghanaian football.
“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the association said.
The 20-year-old forward had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from earlier this year. He made 13 appearances for the club, scoring two goals and showing signs of a bright future in the sport.
