At least nine soldiers and one police officer have been killed in an ambush by gunmen in Giro Masa community, located in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State. Several civilians were also reportedly affected in the attack.
Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the incident on Wednesday while addressing journalists after visiting victims at the mortuary and the Accident and Emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, where the injured were receiving treatment.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, also resulted in the destruction of two military gun trucks, which were set ablaze by the assailants.
Describing the incident as tragic, Governor Idris expressed condolences over the loss of the security personnel and assured that the state government would take responsibility for the medical expenses of the injured, as well as provide support to the families of those who lost their lives.
“This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation. The Kebbi State Government will not relent in its efforts to protect the lives of its citizens,” the governor said.
He also offered prayers for the repose of the deceased and reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across the state.
Following his visit to the hospital, the governor proceeded to the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment.
