The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed concerns raised by a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over the possibility of being excluded from the ballot in upcoming elections, insisting that such an outcome would be the result of the party’s own non-compliance with electoral laws.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Mogaji (Hon.) Seye Oladejo, the APC emphasized that while political pluralism is essential to democracy, all parties must operate within established legal and institutional frameworks. He noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the constitutionally mandated electoral body, is guided strictly by law and cannot be swayed by sentiment or public pressure.
Oladejo argued that the ADC’s situation is not unprecedented, recalling instances where the APC itself faced similar consequences. He cited the 2019 general elections in Zamfara State, where the party was barred from fielding candidates due to invalid primaries, and Rivers State, where internal disputes led to its exclusion—both outcomes upheld by the courts.
According to the APC, these precedents underscore the principle that no political party is above the law and that compliance with electoral guidelines is mandatory. The party described the ADC’s complaints as misplaced, attributing its challenges to internal disorganization, lack of discipline, and procedural lapses.
The statement further criticized the ADC’s leadership, accusing it of failing to manage internal affairs effectively and questioning its readiness for democratic participation. It also rejected any attempt to shift blame onto the ruling party, stressing that the APC would not accept responsibility for what it termed the ADC’s “self-inflicted setbacks.”
Oladejo concluded that the absence of any party from the ballot due to non-compliance would not undermine Nigeria’s democracy. Instead, he urged all political stakeholders to prioritize internal cohesion, adhere strictly to electoral regulations, and contribute to strengthening public confidence in the democratic process.
The APC reaffirmed its commitment to credible elections and called on all parties to act responsibly in the interest of democratic stability.
