Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has directed the immediate rehabilitation of the failed Mosogar-Oghara section of the Warri-Benin Highway in a bid to ease the hardship faced by thousands of motorists and commuters using the busy federal road.

The governor’s directive follows growing public complaints over the deteriorating condition of the strategic highway, which has caused severe traffic congestion, prolonged travel time and heightened safety concerns in recent months.

Announcing the approval on Wednesday, the Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, said the emergency intervention underscores Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to addressing critical infrastructure challenges affecting the daily lives of residents and road users.

Although the Warri-Benin Highway falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, Izeze said the state government considered it necessary to intervene because of the immense hardship being experienced by commuters and the highway’s importance to economic activities across the South-South region.

According to the commissioner, Governor Oborevwori directed that immediate remedial work be carried out to restore the free flow of traffic and improve safety pending a comprehensive reconstruction of the road by the Federal Government.

He disclosed that Obakpor Engineering Construction Company has already mobilised to the site with construction materials, including stones and sand, marking the commencement of the emergency repairs.

Izeze expressed confidence that the intervention would significantly reduce traffic delays, improve vehicular movement and provide immediate relief for motorists travelling along the affected section.

He added that the governor’s decision reflects the spirit of cooperation between the Delta State and Federal Governments in delivering infrastructure that enhances the welfare of citizens.

“The intervention further demonstrates the shared commitment of the Federal and Delta State Governments to improving critical infrastructure for the benefit of the people, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda,” Izeze said.

The Warri-Benin Highway is a major transport corridor linking the South-South region with other parts of the country and serves as a key route for commuters, commercial vehicles, petroleum tankers and the movement of agricultural and industrial goods.

The failed Mosogar-Oghara axis has become one of the most difficult sections of the highway, with years of deterioration leading to recurring traffic gridlock, vehicle breakdowns and increased transportation costs.

The state government’s emergency intervention is expected to provide temporary relief for road users while awaiting a comprehensive reconstruction of the highway by the appropriate federal authorities.
