Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has expressed readiness to support any consensus candidate that emerges from the coalition forming around the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, Atiku addressed concerns about unity within the coalition and how a presidential flagbearer would be selected.
He clarified that the priority is not necessarily stepping aside, but backing a unified choice. According to him, the coalition will first pursue a consensus arrangement, which he described as its preferred approach.
“It’s not the issue of stepping aside, rather would I support? In the coalition, the first option would be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t emerge, then we go for direct primary and I will support anybody who emerges,” he said.
Atiku reiterated that consensus remains the coalition’s primary strategy, noting that a direct primary would only be considered if agreement cannot be reached among stakeholders.
