The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on politicians to prioritise mediation and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms instead of relying heavily on courts to resolve electoral disputes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appeal was made on Thursday by Sulayma Ibrahim, Director of Litigation and Prosecution at INEC, during the “Mediation Without Borders” summit held in Abuja.
The event, organised by the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC), brought together experts, professionals, and stakeholders to promote dialogue, knowledge sharing, and collaboration in the field of mediation.
Ibrahim emphasised the importance of adopting non-adversarial approaches to conflict resolution, noting that mediation can help reduce the burden on courts, foster political stability, and encourage more amicable settlements of electoral disputes.
