A mild drama unfolded in Akwa Ibom State after a masquerader was reportedly arrested and detained by police officers for allegedly causing a public disturbance. The incident, which occurred in a yet-to-be-confirmed community, has sparked widespread conversation among residents and on social media.

Witnesses said the masquerader had been performing along a public route when a disagreement arose between members of the procession and passersby, prompting security operatives to intervene. The situation allegedly escalated, leading to the arrest of the masquerader and the dispersal of the crowd for safety.

The unusual detention immediately triggered a wave of reactions from locals, many of whom expressed surprise and amusement. Some residents jokingly questioned the legal process involved, asking, “Who will bail the masquerade since it is considered a spirit?”

Others, however, viewed the incident more seriously, arguing that cultural displays—though traditional and widely respected—must not disrupt public order or endanger lives.

Community leaders have called for calm and urged both cultural groups and law-enforcement officers to maintain mutual respect in handling such situations. They emphasized the need to balance the preservation of cultural heritage with the safety and rights of the public.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the matter as at the time of filing this report.
