Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an extraordinary 21-year career with the Argentina national team.
The 39-year-old Argentina captain made the announcement on Monday, August 31, 2026, saying he has decided to step away from the national team after more than two decades representing his country.
Messi revealed that he had initially written his farewell message following Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on July 19. However, he later confirmed his decision after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, in August.
His retirement marks the end of one of the most decorated international careers in football history. Messi leaves Argentina as the country’s most-capped player, having made 207 appearances, while also holding the record as the national team’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals.
The Barcelona and Inter Miami legend finally achieved World Cup glory with Argentina in 2022, when he captained La Albiceleste to victory in Qatar. He also played a pivotal role in Argentina’s Copa América triumphs in 2021 and 2024.
Messi’s decision, however, does not signal the end of his professional playing career. He remains under contract with Inter Miami CF and is expected to continue playing at club level through the end of the 2028 Major League Soccer season.
For Argentina, Messi’s departure closes a remarkable chapter defined by records, trophies, heartbreak and, ultimately, international glory.
