A coalition of six opposition political parties has proposed the establishment of a four-year “government of national competence” ahead of the 2027 general election.
The proposal was unveiled on Monday at a summit of opposition political parties organised by G100 in Abuja, where participants discussed strategies for providing an alternative political direction for Nigeria ahead of the next general elections.
According to the coalition, the proposed government would operate for a single four-year term as a transitional administration focused on addressing the country’s major economic, security and institutional challenges.
The parties argued that a government built around competence and national inclusion would help restore public confidence, strengthen democratic institutions and accelerate reforms across critical sectors of the economy.
The proposal is coming amid growing efforts by opposition political groups to forge a stronger alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential and general elections.
The summit provided a platform for the participating parties and political stakeholders to deliberate on possible areas of cooperation, including the need to overcome political divisions and present a credible alternative to Nigerians.
The coalition’s proposal for a single-term government of national competence is expected to generate further debate among political parties, civil society groups and other stakeholders as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
