At least not less than six additional deaths have been confirmed following the fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State.
The Roma news gathered that a total of nine victims have been rescued. Five individuals have been resuscitated. Several others escaped unhurt, while efforts are ongoing to revive the remaining four, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement on Tuesday, raising concerns about possible casualties.
In the meantime, worried by the incident and incessant records of fire outbreak and occurrencies in the country, some respondents reacted and called for urgent attention to avert such.
“Any high-rise buildings that doesn’t have 3 to 4 fire escape exit should be demolished in Nigeria.. fire training should be compulsory and all buildings need fire safety equipment in place to avoid future loose of lives and properties. Fire assessment in high rise buildings is also very important. It’s really sad .. May the soul of those who lost their lives rest in peace”
“As Nigerians we don’t take safety issues seriously. A 20 storey building doesn’t have a fire muster point and valid exits?? We joke with life in Nigeria yet they’re making billions in that building”
“This is the result of not allowing your security team to have access to all buildings, including the offices. I believe that if security had been patrolling all the buildings and offices, they would have noticed the smoke from the inverter room and raised an alarm, which could have enabled a quick response to extinguish the fire”.
