The Delta State capital, Asaba, is wearing a festive look as thousands of athletes, coaches, and officials from across Nigeria have stormed the city for the 9th National Youth  Games with a colourful opening ceremony at the Stephen Keshi Stadium today.

The athletes, drawn from all 36 states and the FCT, were cleared after undergoing a rigorous national screening exercise, with checks on National Identity Numbers (NIN) and physical appearance to ensure compliance with the age regulations. An unnamed official confirmed that the process was thorough to protect the integrity of the Games.

Many of the athletes expressed delight at the process, commending the screening committee for what they described as a job well done.

Meanwhile, communal and commercial activities in Asaba have heightened, with hotels, transporters, and traders recording a surge in patronage ahead of the official flag-off.

Today’s ceremony will feature a match-past of participating states, cultural and musical performances, and the formal declaration of the Games open by top dignitaries, including Governor Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori and representatives of the National Sports Commission.

With the contingents now settled into camp, Asaba is set to host the nation in what promises to be a celebration of youth, unity, and sporting excellence.
