March 28 marks 11 years since Nigeria witnessed one of the most defining moments in its democratic history—the 2015 presidential election.

Held on March 28, 2015, the election saw opposition candidate of the (APC) secure a decisive victory with 15,424,921 votes, defeating the incumbent president, of the (PDP), who garnered 12,853,162 votes.

This outcome marked a historic turning point, as it was the first time in Nigeria’s history that an incumbent president was peacefully voted out of office through the ballot. The election is widely regarded as a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s democratic institutions.

Equally noteworthy was President Jonathan’s swift and gracious acceptance of the results. His decision to concede defeat without contest not only diffused potential tensions but also set a powerful precedent for political maturity and statesmanship in Nigeria.

More than a decade later, the 2015 election continues to stand as a symbol of Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles, peaceful transitions of power, and electoral credibility.
