The National Institute for Sports (NIS) has announced a partnership with the organisers of the Okpekpe 10km Road Race, scheduled to take place on May 23, 2026, in Edo State.

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the NIS, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, disclosed this in a statement, describing the race as a symbol of consistency, excellence and national pride.

Shaibu said the institute’s decision to partner with the event was informed by its international stature and sustained success since its inception in 2013. The Okpekpe Road Race is Nigeria’s first World Athletics Gold Label road race.

According to him, the NIS will support the organisers, particularly in the area of athlete training, to enhance the quality and success of the 2026 edition.

He expressed optimism that with continued collaboration among stakeholders, the race could soon attain World Athletics’ Diamond Label status.

Shaibu also revealed his personal intention to participate in the 10km race, noting that preparations were already underway.

Describing the event as a source of pride for Edo State and the nation, the NIS boss reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sports development and elevate Nigeria’s global sporting profile.
