NUJ Hails Oborevwori’s Approval of Full 13th-Month Salary for Delta Workers

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for approving the payment of a full 13th-month salary to public servants in the state, describing the decision as a landmark welfare initiative that underscores his commitment to workers’ well-being.

In a statement jointly signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, and Acting Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior, the union said the approval reflects the governor’s recognition of workers as critical partners in the delivery of good governance and sustainable development.

The Council particularly praised Governor Oborevwori for approving the payment of a full month’s salary as the 13th-month package, rather than the basic salary model adopted in some other states, noting that the gesture demonstrates genuine concern for the economic welfare of workers and their families.

According to the NUJ, the initiative will provide much-needed financial relief for public servants, particularly at the beginning of the year when many households face financial pressure following Christmas and New Year celebrations.

“The additional salary will provide much-needed financial stability for workers after the heavy expenditures associated with the festive season. January, often regarded as a financially difficult month for many households, will no longer be approached with anxiety by Delta workers,” the statement said.

The union added that the extra payment would enable workers to meet family obligations, settle financial commitments and resume work with greater enthusiasm and peace of mind.

The NUJ further stated that the initiative would boost workers’ morale, strengthen their purchasing power, stimulate economic activities across the state and deepen the cordial relationship between government and organised labour.

“A motivated workforce is invariably a more productive workforce, and this decision is expected to translate into improved service delivery across the public service,” the Council noted.

The journalists’ union said the welfare package aligns with Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which prioritises workers’ welfare as a catalyst for development.

It also urged local government councils in the state to emulate the governor by extending similar welfare packages to workers under their employment to ensure they also enjoy a sense of belonging.

The Council expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori for what it described as an exemplary act of leadership and compassion, expressing confidence that the gesture would inspire greater dedication, loyalty and excellence among public servants while strengthening Delta State’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most worker-friendly states.

The NUJ also prayed for God’s continued wisdom, good health and success for the governor as he continues to lead the state.
