BENIN CITY — Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his wife, Betsy Obaseki, have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Madam Dorothy Theresa Wilkinson, describing her as a woman of extraordinary grace, resilience and unwavering faith whose life was defined by service, compassion and integrity.
In a tribute released following her death at the age of 93, the Obasekis said they received the news with profound sadness but also with gratitude to God for what they described as a long, impactful and fulfilled life.
According to the former governor, Madam Wilkinson belonged to a rare generation of women whose quiet dignity, strength of character and selfless devotion to family and society left an enduring legacy.
Obaseki noted that as the wife of the late Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh, Nigeria’s first Minister of Finance, she stood steadfastly by her family through different phases of life, helping to preserve a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
He also praised her for raising children who have distinguished themselves in various fields, particularly Dr. (Mrs.) Ajoritsedere Josephine Awosika, former Chairman of the Board of Access Bank Plc and Honorary Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Nigeria, whose achievements, he said, reflected the values of excellence, discipline and integrity instilled by her mother.
Reflecting on his time in office, Obaseki recalled that Madam Wilkinson remained a source of encouragement to his family throughout his eight-year tenure as governor of Edo State.
“Mama was a pillar of strength and support for us during the eight years when I served as governor of Edo State, continuously holding us up with her prayers and wise counsel,” he said.
The former governor said Madam Wilkinson’s influence extended beyond her immediate family, noting that her legacy of faith, kindness, discipline and service would continue to live on through her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He extended condolences to Dr. Ajoritsedere Josephine Awosika, her siblings, the Wilkinson and Okotie-Eboh families, as well as relatives, friends and associates mourning the matriarch’s passing.
While acknowledging that her death had created a huge void, Obaseki said her family and loved ones could find comfort in the fact that she lived a life of honour, purpose and lasting impact.
He prayed for God to grant her eternal rest and give her family the strength and comfort to bear the loss.
Madam Dorothy Theresa Wilkinson passed away in 2026 at the age of 93. She was widely remembered for her devotion to family, faith and service, as well as for the enduring legacy she leaves behind through generations of accomplished descendants.
