Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has renewed her call on Nigerians to embrace home gardening as a practical way of enhancing food security, promoting healthy living, and supporting environmental sustainability.
The appeal followed another successful harvest from the vegetable garden at the State House, Abuja, which she established about two years ago as part of efforts to encourage food production through a national home gardening initiative.
During a routine visit to the garden, the First Lady harvested a variety of fresh vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf, and fluted pumpkin, highlighting the continued success of the initiative.
Speaking after the harvest, Mrs. Tinubu said maintaining a home garden offers families access to fresh and nutritious food at a relatively low cost while contributing to the nation’s food security efforts.
She also noted that home gardening plays an important role in addressing climate change by encouraging greener environments and sustainable agricultural practices.
The First Lady urged Nigerians to cultivate and sustain an interest in home gardening, describing it as a simple but effective way to improve household nutrition and reduce food costs.
In a gesture of generosity, Mrs. Tinubu shared part of the day’s harvest with members of her staff and encouraged Nigerians to always demonstrate compassion by sharing with those in need.
The State House vegetable garden, established to promote food security and self-sufficiency, has continued to produce a steady supply of fresh vegetables, reinforcing the First Lady’s advocacy for home gardening across the country.
