The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has endorsed the ongoing constitutional amendment process, expressing strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly’s efforts to introduce reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and security architecture.
Chairman of the Conference and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, made the position known on Tuesday while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2026 National Assembly Open Week in Abuja.
Guwor described the proposed constitutional amendments, particularly those on state policing and devolution of powers, as a historic opportunity to deepen federalism, improve governance and enhance national security.
He commended President Tinubu for what he described as his commitment to tackling Nigeria’s security challenges through institutional reforms, while also praising the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their patriotism and dedication to the constitutional review process.
According to him, insecurity remains Nigeria’s most pressing challenge and requires collective action involving all levels of government, legislatures, security agencies, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and local communities.
“Insecurity remains the greatest challenge confronting our nation today. Security is a shared responsibility, and through collective action, we can build a safer and more peaceful nation,” Guwor said.
The Conference chairman noted that if successfully adopted and implemented, the constitutional reforms would strengthen the country’s security framework, improve collaboration among governments, bring governance closer to the people and reinforce the principles of true federalism.
“The ongoing constitutional amendment process presents a historic opportunity to strengthen our federation and improve governance. These efforts reflect a genuine determination to build a more secure, responsive and effective governance structure for our country,” he stated.
Guwor reaffirmed the commitment of the Conference of Speakers to working closely with the Presidency, the National Assembly and other stakeholders to ensure the reforms ultimately serve the interests of Nigerians.
He also applauded the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and the leadership of the National Assembly for sustaining the National Assembly Open Week, describing it as an important platform for promoting transparency, accountability and public participation in the legislative process.
According to him, strong democratic institutions thrive on openness, accountability and meaningful engagement between elected representatives and citizens.
He urged all stakeholders to remain committed to strengthening democratic institutions and building a federation that reflects the aspirations of all Nigerians.
Guwor stressed that achieving lasting peace and national development would require not only strong institutions but also enduring partnerships built on trust, collaboration and active citizen participation.
