ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reaffirmed its readiness to support the implementation of State Police if adopted, assuring Nigerians that the process would be guided by professionalism, accountability, and operational excellence in the interest of national security.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, made the declaration on Thursday while opening a one-day sensitisation workshop on State Police organised by the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies (NIPS) in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the workshop was designed to equip police officers with the knowledge required to engage constructively in the ongoing national conversation on State Police and contribute effectively to the implementation of future policing reforms.

Disu described the workshop as an important platform for preparing officers for emerging reforms in the country’s policing architecture, stressing that the Force remains committed to supporting any constitutional framework establishing State Police while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.

In his welcome address, the Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies, Professor Olu Ogunshakin, commended the Inspector-General for setting up the Nigeria Police Force Steering Committee on State Police. He noted that several recommendations made by the committee have been incorporated into the proposed State Police Bill currently under consideration.

Ogunshakin described the committee’s contributions as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to reform and strengthen policing across the country.

The Inspector-General also urged participants to actively engage in the workshop’s deliberations and share the knowledge gained with officers in their respective commands and formations to foster a common understanding of the proposed policing reform throughout the Force.

According to the police, the sensitisation programme forms part of the Nigeria Police Force’s broader commitment to preparing its personnel for emerging reforms while sustaining professionalism, operational effectiveness, and public confidence in policing nationwide.
