PORT HARCOURT – The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Rivers State Chapter, has called on Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara to appoint a new leadership for the Rivers State Ministry of Sports and restructure the management of the state’s major government-owned sports clubs.

The resolution was reached during the association’s general meeting held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.

Speaking after the meeting, SWAN Chairman, Cyril Dum Wite, expressed concern over the current state of sports administration in Rivers State, stating that the sector was gradually losing its relevance under the present leadership of the Ministry of Sports.

According to him, stakeholders can no longer remain silent while the fortunes of sports continue to decline, stressing the need for competent and experienced administrators to take charge of the ministry and restore confidence in the sector.

The association also called for a complete reorganisation of the management of Rivers United, Rivers Angels and Rivers Hoopers, alleging that the current administrators have failed to justify the significant investment made by the state government in the clubs.

SWAN maintained that individuals with proven competence and a strong track record in sports administration should be appointed to manage the clubs and reposition them for greater success in the coming season.

Despite its demands for reforms, the association commended Governor Fubara for his continued commitment to sports development in the state.

Dum Wite cited the ongoing renovation of the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, the approval and release of funds for athletes’ participation in national and international competitions, as well as the payment of cash rewards to outstanding athletes, as clear demonstrations of the governor’s support for sports.

The SWAN chairman also appealed to Governor Fubara to consider constructing a befitting secretariat for the association, expressing hope that such a project would serve as a lasting legacy in recognition of his administration’s contributions to sports development in Rivers State.
