The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed strong optimism that the lingering political crisis in Rivers State is close to a final resolution following a renewed intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
Wike spoke to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja after inspecting several ongoing projects in the Federal Capital Territory. He credited President Tinubu’s decisive leadership with calming tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State.
According to the minister, the president’s role as a national unifier remains central to restoring stability in the state.
“I believe that by the grace of God, this will be the last time the president will be bothered with this issue and that this will be the last time the Rivers people will need to hear this kind of discord,” Wike said.
He stressed that the president’s counsel carries significant authority, describing Tinubu as a father figure whose guidance should be respected by all parties involved.
“The president is the father of the nation, and when a father speaks, his children must listen and do the needful to ensure peace and progress,” he added.
Commenting on expectations following the truce, Wike expressed confidence that both the Rivers State House of Assembly and Governor Siminalayi Fubara would act responsibly to sustain peace.
“The House of Assembly will do what they are supposed to do, and I am confident that the governor will also carry out the acts required of him to ensure this peace is sustainable,” the minister stated.
Wike emphasised that restoring stability and enabling development in Rivers State remains the overriding priority.
“The most important thing is for Rivers State to move forward, and we are grateful to Mr President for his tireless commitment to ensuring that we reach this understanding,” he said.
The Rivers State House of Assembly widely regarded as loyal to Wike had recently initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, escalating political tensions in the state. In an effort to broker a political solution, President Tinubu on Monday summoned both Wike and Fubara to the Presidential Villa for mediation talks aimed at ending the protracted feud.
