Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday assented to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026 at the State House in Abuja, marking a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s national identity management framework.

The signing of the legislation is expected to enhance the legal and institutional framework governing the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), with the aim of improving identity registration, verification, and digital identity services across the country.

The new Act is also expected to support the Federal Government’s drive for efficient public service delivery, improved security, financial inclusion, and a more robust digital economy through a reliable and comprehensive national identity system.

The brief signing ceremony was held at the State House on Friday and attended by senior government officials.

The NIMC Act 2026 is expected to provide the Commission with updated legal backing to effectively implement reforms and expand access to secure and reliable identity management services for Nigerians.
