Nigeria has been ranked among the countries with the highest number of church buildings in the world, placing third on a list of seven countries with the largest estimated number of churches.
The ranking, shared by StatiSense on X, puts the United States at the top with an estimated 350,000 to 380,000 churches, followed by Brazil with between 280,000 and 300,000.
Nigeria comes third with more than 100,000 churches, reflecting the country’s large Christian population and the strong presence of Pentecostal, Catholic and mainline Protestant denominations.
The figures, however, are estimates based largely on registered church buildings and should not be regarded as an official global census. The actual number of churches could be higher in countries where house churches and other unregistered congregations operate.
1. United States — 350,000 to 380,000
The United States tops the ranking, with an estimated 350,000 to 380,000 church buildings.
Its long Christian tradition and religious diversity have contributed to the large number of churches, ranging from small community congregations to some of the world’s largest megachurches.
2. Brazil — 280,000 to 300,000
Brazil ranks second, with an estimated 280,000 to 300,000 churches.
While Catholicism remains a major religious force in the country, Evangelical and Pentecostal movements have expanded significantly over the years, contributing to the country’s large number of Christian congregations.
3. Nigeria — 100,000+
Nigeria occupies third place with more than 100,000 churches.
The country’s sizeable Christian population, particularly the rapid growth and widespread presence of Pentecostal churches, has contributed to its position on the ranking. Catholic and mainline Protestant denominations also maintain extensive networks of congregations across the country.
4. Russia — About 90,000
Russia is estimated to have about 90,000 churches, placing it fourth.
A significant proportion of the country’s churches are affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church. Religious activities expanded following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the easing of restrictions on religious practice.
5. Mexico — About 88,000
Mexico ranks fifth with approximately 88,000 churches.
The country has a deeply rooted Catholic tradition, alongside a growing presence of Evangelical and other Christian denominations.
6. Philippines — About 85,000
The Philippines comes sixth, with an estimated 85,000 churches.
It is one of the most predominantly Christian countries in Asia, with Catholicism accounting for the majority of the Christian population. Evangelical and independent Christian movements also have a significant presence.
7. China — 70,000+
China rounds off the ranking with more than 70,000 registered churches and places of Christian worship.
However, the actual number of Christian congregations may be considerably higher because of house churches and other unregistered groups operating outside the official registration system.
StatiSense noted that the figures are estimates of registered church buildings and should therefore not be interpreted as an authoritative global census.
The ranking nevertheless highlights the extensive presence of Christianity across North and South America, Africa, Europe and Asia, with Nigeria standing out as the only African country among the seven nations listed.
