Venezuela’s Defence Minister, Vladimir López, has accused the United States of carrying out what he described as a “criminal military aggression” against the country, following a series of explosions in the capital, Caracas.
Several blasts were reported in the early hours of Saturday, with parts of the Venezuelan capital temporarily cut off from the electricity grid, according to local reports.
Hours after the explosions, US President Donald Trump claimed on social media that American forces had successfully captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
Speaking in a video message shared on social media, López said Venezuelan airspace had been attacked during the early morning hours. He condemned the alleged action, calling it “the most criminal military aggression by the US government in North America.”
The defence minister insisted that the strikes would not defeat Venezuela, signalling continued resistance despite the reported attacks.
