United States Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance, the couple announced on Sunday.
In a joint statement shared on X, the vice president and his wife said both mother and baby are doing well following the birth.
“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the couple said.
The Vances also expressed gratitude to the medical staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where Usha Vance gave birth and is recovering.
The couple, who married in 2014, are also parents to three other children: Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4. Alec Neel Vance is their fourth child and second son born during their marriage.
According to historical accounts, the birth marks the first time in the modern era that a sitting U.S. vice president and second family have welcomed a child while serving in office. The last recorded instance dates back more than 150 years, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen Colfax, welcomed their son, Schuyler Colfax III, in 1870 during the administration of President Ulysses S. Grant.
The announcement drew congratulatory messages from supporters and public officials, as the Vance family celebrated the newest addition while serving in one of the nation’s highest offices.
