Today, 17th November 2025, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, received a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Education and the TETFUND Implementation Monitoring Committee for an official working visit to review UBTH facilities and to access the possibility of establishing a state-of-the-art Medical Simulation Centre in the facility.

The delegation, led by Prof. Lawrence Appah, Prof. Emem Bassey, and Dr. Oluwafemi Owagbesin, engaged with UBTH management, under the distinguished leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, as well as representatives from the University of Benin, led by the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Wilson Sadoh.

Discussions focused on assessing existing infrastructure, reviewing ongoing medical training initiatives, and evaluating UBTH’s capacity to host a world-class simulation centre for medical students.

The proposed centre, funded under the TETFUND framework, will be established to meet international standards and advance medical education and training. It is designed as a standalone facility that will cater to both UBTH and UNIBEN students, with the capacity to support the diverse specialties in healthcare.

During the visit, the Chief Medical Director emphasized UBTH’s extensive expertise and robust clinical capacity, highlighting that the hospital is well-positioned to be considered a prime location for the facility.

UBTH is one of eight institutions selected for this initiative, which aims to ensure that every state in Nigeria will eventually have a dedicated medical simulation centre, strengthening healthcare training and delivery nationwide.
