Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, on Saturday arrived in Cotonou, Benin Republic, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the inauguration of Romuald Wadagni.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at the Presidential Palace in Cotonou, where Shettima will join other African and international leaders for the event.
According to the Vice President, his trip underscores the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic, rooted in deep historical, socio-cultural, and economic ties.
He noted, however, that contemporary bilateral relations between both countries are largely shaped by cooperation in border security, trade policies, and energy matters.
“Earlier today, I departed Abuja for Cotonou to represent my boss, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the inauguration of Romuald Wadagni as the President of the Republic of Benin,” Shettima stated.
Nigeria and Benin Republic maintain close diplomatic and economic relations as neighbouring West African countries with significant cross-border interactions in commerce, security, and regional integration.
