Nigeria’s Super Falcons have suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in their WAFCON 2026 quarter-final clash, leaving their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through the direct route in jeopardy.
Nyadjou scored the decisive goal in the 19th minute to give Cameroon the lead, with the Indomitable Lionesses holding on for the victory despite sustained pressure from Nigeria.
Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina was outstanding between the posts, making eight crucial saves as the Super Falcons repeatedly pushed for an equaliser.
Nigeria created several scoring opportunities but struggled to find a way past Bihina, whose impressive performance helped Cameroon preserve their slender advantage until the final whistle.
The defeat means the Super Falcons will not secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through the WAFCON semi-final route.
Under the qualification format, the four teams that reach the semi-finals of the African championship will earn direct tickets to the World Cup, while the four losing quarter-finalists will have to battle through an additional play-off route.
As one of the defeated quarter-finalists, Nigeria will now enter the African play-offs alongside the other three teams eliminated at the same stage.
Victory in that play-off route would give the Super Falcons another opportunity to reach the inter-confederation play-offs, where they could still secure a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s defeat therefore does not end their World Cup hopes, but it has made the road to Brazil considerably more difficult.
The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup is scheduled to be hosted by Brazil.
