The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of the North-Central Zone, Isyaku Mohammed, has declared that terrorists, repentant criminals and other persons with questionable backgrounds will not be recruited into the Nigeria Police Force.
Mohammed made the statement on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The meeting brought together officers and men of the Kwara State Police Command, traditional rulers, religious leaders, transport union officials and other key stakeholders.
Addressing participants, the DIG urged community heads, traditional rulers, religious leaders and security stakeholders not to recommend or endorse individuals with criminal records for recruitment into the police or other security agencies.
According to him, the Nigeria Police has strengthened its recruitment process to prevent terrorists and criminal elements from infiltrating the force.
“The only thing we can do is to protect our own territory and ensure that such repented people do not find their way into the Nigeria Police,” Mohammed said.
“And we are doing everything possible to ensure that not just repented criminals, even bad boys, we don’t allow them to find their way into the Nigeria Police.”
He further appealed to community leaders to support the police by exposing individuals with criminal backgrounds instead of endorsing them for recruitment.
“So, you our stakeholders, community heads and others, don’t sign for them, identify them, expose them. We will not allow them into the system,” the DIG added.
