Renowned Nigerian playwright, poet, essayist and Nobel laureate, Professor Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka, turns 92, marking another milestone in the life of one of Africa’s most influential literary and public intellectuals.
Soyinka, who made history in 1986 as the first African to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, has built a remarkable legacy spanning literature, theatre, academia, and human rights advocacy.
According to Ethnic African Stories, here are some lesser-known facts about the celebrated writer:
Born into a family of educators, Soyinka’s father was a school headmaster, while his mother, Grace Eniola Soyinka, was a respected teacher and social activist popularly known as “Wild Christian.”
During the Western Region political crisis in 1965, he reportedly entered a broadcasting station in Ibadan and replaced a recorded political speech with a message urging that the genuine election results be respected.
His activism came at a heavy personal cost. During the Nigerian Civil War, Soyinka spent about 22 months in solitary confinement after attempting to mediate between the Federal Government and Biafran leaders. While in prison, he secretly wrote notes on tissue paper, cigarette packets and other materials that could be concealed from prison authorities.
His full name is Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka, and as a young dramatist, he founded the theatre group known as 1960 Masks, which later evolved into the Orisun Theatre Company.
Over the years, Soyinka has maintained a fiercely independent stance on national issues. He has declined certain national honours, explaining that he prefers to remain independent of political authority.
During the military regime of General Sani Abacha, he fled Nigeria after being accused of treason and spent several years in exile before returning following the restoration of democratic rule.
Beyond his original literary works, Soyinka is also an accomplished translator, having translated both Yoruba literary works and Greek tragedies into English. His academic career has taken him to universities across Africa, Europe and North America.
Away from public life, Soyinka is said to enjoy cooking for his family. His memoir, Aké: The Years of Childhood, remains one of his most widely read books, offering a vivid account of growing up in colonial Nigeria.
Throughout his decades-long career, Soyinka has survived multiple assassination threats arising from his outspoken criticism of authoritarian governments and military dictatorships. Even at 92, he remains active as a writer, lecturer and public commentator on national and international affairs.
