The Nigeria Police Force has announced that CP Yemi John Oyeniyi has officially assumed duty as the 24th Commissioner of Police for the Delta State Command, succeeding CP Aina Adesola.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, Oyeniyi took over leadership of the command with an extensive record of service spanning operational, administrative, investigative, and training roles within the Force.
Born on March 5, 1969, Oyeniyi hails from Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University (1991) and a Master’s degree in Public Order and Information Management from University of Uyo (2023). He also obtained a Diploma in Personnel Management from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management and a Diploma in Community Policing from the Police Staff College.
Oyeniyi was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on June 10, 1994, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) at the Nigeria Police Academy. Following his training, he was deployed to Akwa Ibom State Command in 1996.
Over the years, he has held several strategic positions, including Officer-in-Charge of General Investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both Akwa Ibom and Delta State Commands, as well as Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Fraud Unit in Delta. He also served as Divisional Crime Officer in Ikot Abasi and held administrative and operational roles in Ibiono-Ibom.
His service record extends beyond Nigeria, having participated in international peacekeeping missions with the African Mission in Sudan (AMIS) and the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) between 2007 and 2010.
Oyeniyi has also served in various state commands, including Zamfara, Enugu, Ogun, Oyo, and Ondo. Notably, he was Assistant Commissioner of Police at the Advanced Training Wing, Police College Oji River, and later at the Ogbomosho Area Command. He served as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) in Ondo State before his posting in May 2025 as Commissioner of Police/Deputy Head at the Interpol National Central Bureau in Abuja.
He has attended several professional courses, including the Junior Command Course and Tactical Leadership and Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos; a Leadership Training Course at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria; and the Strategic Leadership and Command Course at the National Institute of Police Studies.
A member of professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management and the National Institute of Police Studies, Oyeniyi is described as a seasoned officer known for discipline, professionalism, and strategic leadership.
According to SP Bright Edafe, the new Commissioner brings over two decades of experience in criminal investigation, anti-fraud operations, police training, and international law enforcement collaboration.
Outside his professional duties, Oyeniyi enjoys listening to music and watching football. He is married with children.
