Christian writer and speaker Phebe Osagie has encouraged Christian singles to remain committed to sexual purity, arguing that obedience to God should never be determined by the choices or past of a future spouse.
In a Facebook post, Osagie addressed a question she described as one of the most common concerns among Christian singles: “What if I remain a virgin, but eventually marry someone who has been sexually active?”
She said some people also question the value of abstinence before marriage if their future husband or wife may not have made the same commitment.
According to Osagie, such concerns, while understandable, should not become a justification for disobeying God’s commands.
She argued that every individual is personally accountable to God, citing Romans 14:12, which states that “each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.”
“Your purity is first an act of worship to God before it is a gift to your future spouse,” she wrote, adding that believers should pursue holiness because of their love for God rather than because of another person’s actions.
Osagie also distinguished between individuals who continue to live in sin and those who have genuinely repented and experienced transformation through faith in Christ.
She noted that while God’s grace is sufficient to forgive a person’s sinful past, it should never be viewed as permission to continue living in sin.
The Christian writer urged singles not to allow the possibility of a future spouse’s past to become an excuse for compromising their own convictions.
She encouraged believers to remain faithful to God’s commands, trust His plan for their lives, and leave the future in His hands.
“Don’t trade your conviction for a situation that has not even happened. Trust God enough to obey Him today,” Osagie concluded.
